A suspected drunk driver thought he could escape police by disappearing into a Louisiana swamp. However, nature had other plans. Local police have now shared video showing the man jumping into the water, where an alligator was waiting.

What started as a routine traffic stop on Sunday quickly turned into a dramatic chase involving law enforcement, a swamp, a police drone, and an angry alligator.

According to authorities, 40-year-old Victor Rivas was pulled over after allegedly driving recklessly in a Toyota. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle strike a concrete barrier before blowing out a tire.

But instead of cooperating with officers, Rivas reportedly made a desperate run for it. After stopping on Interstate 310, the man fled from police and jumped from the elevated highway straight into the swamp below, in the hope of escaping the police.

But what happened next sounds like something straight out of a movie. As officers chased him through the swamp, Rivas reportedly ran directly into an alligator. Body camera footage later captured the shocking incident, showing how Rivas is struggling with the alligator.

Despite being bitten on his arms, Rivas managed to break free from the animal’s jaws and continued running deeper into the swamp. However, his escape wasn’t over.

“Undeterred by his injuries, Rivas continued fleeing before being located by our drone team,” the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Using a police drone, operators tracked his movements from above and guided deputies to his location. Officers eventually apprehended him as he emerged from the swamp.

Rivas was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening.

“Wildlife may just be cooperating with law enforcement”

The sheriff’s office couldn’t resist adding a bit of humor to the bizarre incident.

“Reminder: Don’t drive impaired, don’t run from deputies, and definitely don’t hide in Louisiana swamps,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Wildlife may just be cooperating with law enforcement.”

Rivas now faces charges including operating a vehicle while impaired and resisting an officer.
