55-year-old Alejandro Fernández recently found himself at the center of an unexpected online debate after viewers noticed what appeared to be a white coating on his tongue during a performance. The video quickly spread across social media, with users offering everything from jokes to more serious theories about what might have caused it.

The attention came just weeks after FIFA announced that Fernández would be part of the lineup for the 2026 World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico. Calling the opportunity a “great honor,” the singer said he was proud to represent Mexican music on a global stage. He is set to perform alongside artists including J Balvin, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, and South African singer Tyla.

Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, much of the online conversation shifted to the viral clip. “You have to brush your tongue !!!” one person wrote.

Others speculated about possible health issues or substance use, while some attempted to explain the appearance through less conventional theories.

As the discussion gained traction, dental professionals emphasized that it is impossible to accurately diagnose someone based solely on photographs or videos.

Dentist Margot López explained that the simplest explanation could be something as ordinary as not cleaning the tongue thoroughly. She also noted that dry mouth, certain autoimmune conditions, medication use, or other health factors could potentially contribute to a white coating.

Another dentist, Denisse B. Pérez, said there are numerous possible causes, many of which are temporary and harmless. Common reasons include bacteria buildup, food debris, dehydration, reduced saliva production, smoking, medication side effects, and certain medical conditions.

Experts stressed that a proper diagnosis requires far more than a visual observation. Medical history, symptoms, physical examinations, and additional testing are often necessary before any conclusions can be made.

Dentist Arantxa Villegas added that factors such as recent illness, fever, mouth breathing, medication-induced dry mouth, or oral thrush could potentially contribute to a white appearance on the tongue. However, she emphasized that none of these possibilities can be confirmed through images alone.

Health professionals also pointed out that stage lighting, camera angles, video quality, and overexposure can dramatically alter how facial and oral features appear on screen. In some cases, bright lighting can make the tongue appear much whiter than it actually is.

While the speculation may have been entertaining for some viewers, experts warned that drawing conclusions about a person’s health based on viral clips can spread misinformation and create unnecessary concern.

The discussion ultimately evolved into a broader conversation about oral hygiene. Dentists noted that tongue cleaning is often overlooked despite being an important part of oral care. Regular tongue brushing or the use of a tongue scraper can help reduce bacteria buildup, bad breath, and the accumulation of debris that may cause a coated appearance.

Experts recommend brushing the tongue daily, flossing, staying hydrated, using fluoride toothpaste, and attending regular dental checkups. They also advise seeking professional evaluation if changes in tongue color, texture, pain, ulcers, or persistent coatings do not resolve over time.

Fernández remains one of the most recognizable figures in regional Mexican music, with a career spanning more than three decades. The son of legendary singer Vicente Fernández, he recently honored his father through his De Rey A Rey Tour. His daughter, Camila Fernández, joined him as an opening act during several recent performances.
