The Foolproof Way to Get Perfectly Crispy Bacon Every Time

There’s something irresistible about bacon that’s cooked just right—crispy, golden, and packed with flavor without being burnt or greasy. Yet for many home cooks, bacon can be frustrating: popping oil, uneven browning, and strips that go from floppy to overdone in seconds. The good news is that there’s a simple method that removes the guesswork and delivers consistent results every time, all while keeping your kitchen cleaner and your hands free.

The secret starts with using your oven instead of the stovetop. Preheat it to 400°F (200°C), which allows the bacon to cook evenly while slowly rendering out excess fat. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper to catch drips and simplify cleanup. For extra crispness, place a metal rack over the pan so hot air can circulate underneath the strips, though this step is optional. This setup helps the bacon cook evenly without sitting in its own grease.

Lay the bacon strips in a single layer, making sure they don’t overlap. This spacing is key to achieving that uniform crunch. Bake regular-cut bacon for about 15 to 18 minutes, and allow thicker slices closer to 20 to 24 minutes. Since bacon thickness and brands vary, keep an eye on it during the final minutes. Once the strips turn a rich golden brown, transfer them to paper towels and let them rest briefly to finish crisping as they cool.

One of the best things about oven-baked bacon is how easy it is to customize. A touch of brown sugar or maple syrup adds gentle sweetness, while black pepper, smoked paprika, or chili flakes bring subtle heat. This method is reliable, low-mess, and endlessly adaptable. Whether you’re serving breakfast, building a sandwich, or adding crunch to a salad, perfectly crisp bacon becomes an easy win with this approach.
