Michael Jackson’s former bodyguard reveals truth behind nose tape

One of Michael Jackson’s most puzzling trademarks is back in the spotlight after a former bodyguard revealed why the “genius” singer frequently wore tape across his nose.

Interest in Michael Jackson has surged again in recent months following the release of Michael, the biopic that stars Jaafar Jackson – Jermaine’s son – in the titular role, as well as a new lawsuit involving members of the Cascio family, who have accused the late singer of sexual abuse.

Amid the renewed attention, one of Jackson’s former bodyguards is revisiting a mystery that puzzled fans for years.

Matt Fiddes, a British-born martial arts instructor who worked closely with Jackson for more than a decade, has spoken about the singer’s carefully crafted public image and the unusual methods he allegedly used to keep the media interested wherever he went.

For decades, photographs of the “Billie Jean” singer wearing surgical masks, oversized sunglasses, gloves, and strips of tape across his nose fueled endless speculation. Fans debated whether the coverings were linked to health concerns, cosmetic procedures, or attempts to shield himself from the public eye.

According to Fiddes, however, there was far more strategy involved than many people realized.

The former bodyguard explained that Jackson paid close attention to the way he was portrayed and understood exactly how to generate headlines.

‘Greatest mystery on Earth’

“He knew how to manipulate the media. He knew exactly how to get the front pages. He used to have a meeting as soon as he got to a [city],” Fiddes, now 47, told Metro in 2019.

Jackson’s appearance often became almost as much of a story as his music, with every new photograph sparking questions and theories about the singer’s changing look.

Fiddes said that was no accident.

“90 % of the time it worked, by putting a mask on his face, or sticky tape on his hands – or sticky tape on his hands – or tape on his nose was a favourite one. He would say he wanted his life to be the greatest mystery on Earth,” Fiddes told the outlet of the “Beat It” singer, who died in 2009.

‘Guy was a genius’

The topic resurfaced again during a recent appearance on Lee Matthews’ Elite podcast, where Fiddes was asked about some of Jackson’s most talked-about public appearances.

Reflecting on the singer’s relationship with the press, he argued that Jackson understood how quickly public attention could shift and worked hard to remain a constant subject of conversation.

“He would want you to believe that he was a clown,” Fiddes said of his close friend on the May 28, 2026, podcast. “But you don’t get to be the biggest star in the world and stay relevant for that long with the number one hit – one after another after another – and be a complete idiot.

“The guy was a genius. He knew how to reinvent himself and stay relevant with the sticky tape and the tape on his nose, and…the makeup, and the fedora, and the mask, and the sunglasses…”

‘It was all staged’

For years, fans and tabloids tried to decipher the meaning behind those accessories, particularly the tape frequently seen covering part of Jackson’s nose.

The speculation became so widespread that some people believed it was evidence of severe medical issues or complications from the cosmetic surgeries that transformed his appearance over the years.

According to Fiddes, the reality was far less dramatic.

When Matthews asked whether some of Jackson’s appearance choices were deliberately staged, the former bodyguard did not hesitate.

“It was all staged. He wanted people to think his nose was falling off,” Fiddes said, adding “It was allergy tape. That’s all it was.”
