Iran team leave note in World Cup dressing room after being forced to follow strict rules in the U.S

The Iranian national team arrived at the FIFA World Cup under strict rules amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. While they were required to leave the U.S. immediately after their first two matches, the Iranian players made their position clear. After their game in Los Angeles on Sunday, they left a note in the dressing room for the world to see.

Iran’s participation in the World Cup, partly hosted in the United States, has sparked strong emotions amid ongoing tensions between the two countries.

For weeks, it remained uncertain whether Iranian players would even be granted U.S. visas. After a long period of uncertainty, U.S. authorities finally approved visas for the players just 10 days before their opening match.

However, not all members of the Iranian delegation were approved. The Iranian football federation confirmed that several “key managerial and administrative members” were denied entry.

Those affected reportedly include the team manager, two analysts, the media director, and a representative from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, meaning they weren’t able to travel to the United States for the tournament.

Due to the conflict with the U.S., the Iranian national team was not allowed to base themselves in the United States. Their visit conditions have been strict: they could only enter the U.S. on match day and had to leave that night, maintaining their base in Tijuana, Mexico, for the tournament.

Iran at the FIFA World Cup

The decision has been met by hefty criticism from the Iranian national team. Speaking with the Independent, Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei criticized the decision, saying that it has made it increasingly difficult for the team to prepare. He recently questioned why U.S. authorities appear willing to grant his team greater travel flexibility for their final group game but not for their first two matches.

“We only managed to train ?half the time we usually spend on training,” Ghalenoie said, per Reuters. “We wanted to have optimal physical and technical preparation.”

“Look at the Belgium team. They arrived yesterday noon. They’ve managed to have proper training.”

Amir Ghalenoei continued, “For the third game, they’ve allowed us to decide to make our own decisions with regards to planning the travel. But what my problem is: why didn’t they let ‌us come ?earlier for the first two games as well? If they’ve managed to do this now, why didn’t they do that for our first game and for this game?”

So far, the Iranian team has lost one game and drawn one in the World Cup. While their participation has been controversial, the players are now making headlines for another reason.

Iran team left a note in World Cup dressing room

After their 0-0 draw against Belgium on Sunday, the Iranian team left for the airport to return to Mexico. Before departing, they left a note in the dressing room.

“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast,” the note read, which was shared on social media by the Football Federation of Iran and forward Ramin Rezaeian.

“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity. Thank you, Los Angeles, for your hospitality. And thank you to every Iranian who gave their heart, voice, and soul for Iran throughout these 180 minutes,” it continued. “May peace, respect, and friendship prevail among all nations.”

The Iranian team will play its third World Cup game against Egypt in Seattle on Saturday.
