A couple in Florida went through an immense shock after they learned that their daughter was not biologically theirs after a mix-up at the IVF clinic. Now, they have shared news on a new custody agreement after the biological parents were found.
What began as a long-awaited dream for a Florida couple has turned into one of the most emotional IVF cases in recent memory. Now, the story has gotten another major twist.
Last year, Tiffany Score and Steven Mills welcomed their third child in December after turning to IVF. However, the pair filed a lawsuit against the Fertility Center of Orlando last year after storing three viable embryos at the clinic.
After an IVF mix-up, Tiffany Score and Steven Mills raised a child not biologically related to them. Now, they have confirmed a new development in their ongoing journey.
The lawsuit stated that both parents are white, yet the baby conceived through IVF was described as “a racially non-Caucasian child.” Later genetic testing confirmed that the child was not biologically related to them.
Tiffany and Steven previously told People Magazine that they wanted to continue raising their daughter, Shea, as their own. Still, they felt it was a “moral obligation” to locate her biological parents.
Florida couple learned their daughter wasn’t their biological child after an IVF mix-up
In April, following months of uncertainty, the couple revealed that genetic testing had identified their daughter’s biological parents.
For Tiffany and Steven, learning about Shea’s biological parents was a moment filled with mixed emotions. In a statement at the time, they said this “ends one chapter in our heartbreaking journey” and noted that it “raises new issues that will have to be resolved.”
But despite everything they have been through, one thing remained unchanged: the love for their child, Shea, will never go away.
“Only one thing is as absolutely certain today as it was on the day our daughter was born — we will love and will be this child’s parents forever.”
Recently, court documents obtained by People Magazine confirm that the situation has moved toward resolution. A “mutually devised custody agreement” has now been reached between Score and Mills and the child’s biological parents.
The identities of the biological parents will remain confidential, according to the filing. However, while the details have not been made public, the agreement confirmed that Tiffany Score and Steven Mills will remain the child’s permanent custodial parents.
Reached a custody agreement with the biological parents
A representative for the couple told People Magazine they will not be commenting further, as their focus is now on their daughter and the future relationship with the child’s biological parents.
“Tiffany and Steve recognize the public interest in the details of their IVF experience, and they appreciate the role the news media has played in bringing them and Shea to the point where Shea’s genetic parents were able to be identified and fears about Shea’s future have been settled,” the representative said.
They also emphasized that both families are now trying to move forward in a respectful and private way.
“Tiffany and Steve are committed to respect the privacy concerns of Shea’s genetic parents with whom they have begun and intend to continue to foster a relationship of friendship and trust,” the representative added. “They are also committed to protecting Shea from harmful intrusion on her privacy.”
A court hearing to officially finalize the custody arrangement was scheduled for Monday, June 15, according to People Magazine. So far, there’s been no news on how that went.
IFV clinic announces they are shutting down
According to its website, the local IVF clinic announced that it closed its operations on May 20 of this year. In a statement, they said that after “thoughtful consideration, Fertility Center of Orlando will be closing.”
“Patients are welcomed and encouraged to transition their care to CNY Fertility. CNY Fertility is committed to supporting your continuity of care. You will continue to see many of the same trusted and familiar faces who have been part of your care team, along with additional team members dedicated to supporting you on your journey,” the statement continued.
“Cryopreserved specimen are currently being stored and maintained by CNY Fertility,” it added, concluding, “We are grateful for the trust you have placed in Fertility Center of Orlando and are honored to have been part of your journey.”
