She had not been seen in public for more than three years. Then, over a weekend in May, the beloved actress, now age 90, made a surprise return, drawing widespread attention as fans praised her striking appearance.

After many years out of the spotlight, the beloved actress and singer made a surprise appearance over the weekend. The Oscar-winning actress delivered a video message at the annual World Parkinson’s Congress conference, her first public appearance since March 2023.

Speaking to the crowd from her home, wearing a gray sweatshirt over a turtleneck, the congresswoman stated that she was happy to see them again.

Her message read, “I’m pleased to welcome you to the seventh World Parkinson’s Congress. Your participation is invaluable, as we seek to find a cure to this terrible disease. I know well how devastating it can be. May we all become a beacon of light to stop it in its tracks. Count me in as a red thread. Thank you.“

Fans were quick to praise her surprise return to the spotlight in the comment section. In the comment section in a post on X, one person wrote, “The world continues to honor you and admire all you’ve given.”

A second added, “It’s wonderful to see [the legend] again, especially championing an important cause,” while a third simply stated, “One of the great voices of the last 100 years.”

A fourth gushed, “How lovely to see her looking so well.” A fifth added, “True beauty is deeper than skin! She looks great!”

She looks so beautiful still. I hope she’s well,” another wrote,

The actress and singer was even called a “living legend” by another social media user, and that is no understatement. Looking back on her lush life, the iconic Julie Andrews will always have a special place in many people’s hearts. However, some decades ago, she was ‘robbed’ of her beloved voice.

Julie Andrews was born on October 1, 1935, in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England. Already as a youngster, it appears she was destined to become a star.

When she was 10 years old, Julie began singing in her mother’s, a pianist, and father’s music-hall act, and everyone saw the huge potential she had. Andrews had a four-actave soprano voice, which wasn’t common at all. Before she turned 18, she had already been a professional singer, touring all over the country, and had become a huge help to the family’s finances.

The beloved Julie Andrews lost her singing voice

Julie Andrews aimed for the stars, including a move to the U.S. She made her Broadway debut in 1954 in the American production of the popular British musical The Boy Friend, and some years later, she had her big breakthrough in the Broadway production of My Fair Lady and Camelot.

Then, in 1964, she recahed world fame through her role in Mary Poppins. It was her first-ever film role, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Her singing voice was something special, and she would reach even more legendary status after her performance in The Sound of Music.

However, years later, her voice was gone. And that, according to her, was due to a major mistake. In 1997, she underwent an operation to remove a cyst on her vocal cord. But when she woke up, as she told AARP 2019, her “singing voice was gone.”

“I went into a depression. It felt like I’d lost my identity.”

The surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York left her with permanent damage that destroyed her voice. Two years later, Julie Andrews filed a malpractice suit against the doctors.

Julie Andrews suffered from muscular striation

Speaking with AARP in 2019, she revealed that she actually didn’t have cancer. Instead, she was suffering from a “certain kind of muscular striation on her vocal cords. She had gotten it while making the 1982 comedy Victor/Victoria.

“But by good fortune,” she tells AARP, “That’s when my daughter Emma and I had been asked to write books for kids,” she said. “So along came a brand-new career in my mid-60s. Boy, was that a lovely surprise.

Julie Andrews continued, “But do I miss singing. Yes. I really do.”

“I would have been quite a sad lady if I hadn’t had the voice to hold on to. The singing was the most important thing of all, and I don’t mean to be Pollyanna about how incredibly lost I’d have been without that.”

Today, Julie Andrews is 90 years old and mostly stays out of the spotlight. But for all those who love her, every moment she appears is truly special.
