Place a Balloon Over Your Shower Drain and See the Surprising Result

Cockroaches are often drawn to bathrooms because of the warm, moist environment created by showers and plumbing. Even regular cleaning cannot always prevent them from slipping inside through drains, especially the shower drain, which stays damp and accessible. This makes homeowners eager to find simple and efficient methods to stop these pests from entering.

One surprisingly effective method uses an everyday household item: a standard party balloon. Cockroaches commonly navigate through plumbing systems, squeezing through even small or irregular openings. Since shower drains remain damp, they become a major entry point for these insects, making them a prime area to focus prevention efforts on.

The balloon trick works by reducing the size of the drain opening, making it harder for cockroaches to crawl through while still allowing water to drain normally. To use the method, the shower drain cover must first be removed. A balloon is then modified by cutting off its ends to create a flexible tube that can fit tightly around the drain cover.

Once the balloon tube is stretched securely around the cover and the cover is placed back onto the drain, it creates a tighter barrier that pests struggle to breach. Though simple, this technique can significantly lower the number of cockroaches entering through the drain.

For best results, however, the balloon method should be paired with general bathroom maintenance. Keeping surfaces dry, cleaning drains frequently, and reducing moisture buildup help eliminate the damp environment that cockroaches prefer.

Finally, inspecting the bathroom for cracks, gaps, or openings around pipes is crucial. Sealing such spaces prevents insects from entering from walls, floors, or behind fixtures. When combined, these steps help maintain a cleaner, more comfortable bathroom environment and reduce unwanted pests.
