The already terrifying mystery surrounding the unexplained death of a Florida youngster on a luxury cruise liner has taken a terrifying new turn, and it is destroying one family.

On November 7, 2025, as the Carnival Horizon sailed back towards Miami, 18-year-old Anna Kepner, a radiant high school cheerleader from Florida, was discovered dead under horrible circumstances. And now, a startling court document has exposed a possible criminal inquiry that could target a member of her family.

Details and Documents Revealed

Authorities have generally kept quiet, but on Monday, November 17, the Daily Mail reported that a maid found Anna’s body stuffed beneath the bed in her cruise stateroom, concealed beneath a blanket and a stack of life jackets.

However, on November 18, the same publication published information from a court filing made in Brevard County by the deceased teen’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson.

According to the documents, one of her own minor children may face criminal charges from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In the framework of Shauntel’s divorce proceedings in 2024, her lawyers filed the emergency request, arguing that she had a “extremely sensitive and severe circumstance” that required additional time to react.

Federal Agents Closing In

Shauntel, who was newly married to Anna’s father, Chris Kepner, had three children of her own, including two minors and an 18-year-old.

The FBI’s present interest in one of the minors is described in the court document. “Currently there is an investigation being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (F.B.I.) arising out of the sudden death of eighteen-year-old Anna Kepner,” it reads.

The motion continues, “The deceased is the daughter of the respondent’s paramour, and the respondent and the minor children of this instant action were all on the cruise ship together. The respondent has been advised, through discussions with FBI investigators and her attorneys, that a criminal case may be initiated against one of the minor children of this instant action.”

The revelation doesn’t stop there, though.

In essence, Shauntel is requesting that the court postpone a custody hearing that her ex-husband, Thomas Hudson, has scheduled because she thinks that whatever she says in family court will compromise the ongoing criminal investigation against her own child.

Anna had not been feeling well the night before her untimely death, according to earlier Daily Mail reporting. According to reports, the adolescent went back to her cabin early, but worried relatives started looking for her after she didn’t show up for breakfast the following morning.

Investigation Continues

The Carnival Horizon arrived in Miami on 8 November, and federal officials are going through every second of the CCTV tape. In order to ascertain who entered Anna’s room and when, authorities are also examining information from the electronic key cards of the passengers.

According to Chris, a crane operator from Titusville, Florida, the accident occurred when he and his family, which included Anna’s stepmother, stepsiblings, and two younger children, were on vacation.

Following Anna’s passing, the entire gang was removed from the ship along with other passengers and held for interrogation by the police.

The FBI Hasn’t Shared Anything With the Family

The FBI, not local law enforcement, is in charge of the inquiry because the Carnival Horizon was travelling between Cozumel and Miami at the time of the incident. The silence, however, has been deafening for Chris.

“The FBI hasn’t shared anything with me yet,” he stated. “I would imagine they’re going to be in contact with me about it, but I know as little as everybody else.”

Although the cause of Anna’s death has not been made public, the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner reports that she was declared dead on board at 11:17 a.m.

A Bright Future Cut Short

In a separate statement to ABC News, Anna’s family remembered her as a “happy, bubbly, straight-A student” whose potential was boundless. “When she walked into a room, she would light it up,” they said. “If you were sad, she’d make you laugh. She would joke around and be the funniest little person in school.”

They shared that Anna had recently taken steps toward a future in public service. “She had just finished taking the test to join the military,” they added. “She was already talking to recruiters and had chosen her career path. She wanted to do something that would help her community.”

Anna’s Lasting Legacy

Anna was well-known for her kindness and sense of community in addition to her academic accomplishments. She was a common presence at Titusville businesses and frequently helped with local initiatives, always willing to help her community.
