Recently, a Reddit thread went viral, sparking curiosity about something that not many have experienced, but many are fascinated by – a 2,000-person nude cruise.

”A significant number of the people on this cruise are repeats meeting up with friends year after year. Others are from the nudist clubs from around the country. It’s a very eclectic group of people, from old hippies, to traditional nudist to even a few who may been there for couples with benefits.”

Now, a woman who works for the company behind the nude cruise has opened up about what it’s really like to be part of it. Kat Whitmire, Vice President of Sales for Bare Necessities Tour and Travel, shares her unique perspective on working for this one-of-a-kind experience.

”I’m a cruise organizer for Bare Necessities Tour and Travel, a nudist-cruise company,” she told Business Insider.

”I spend all year as part of a team planning our two cruises: a February trip aboard our Big Nude Boat, a large cruise ship that has 2,100 passengers, and a smaller cruise in the summer.”

Kat has always had a passion for cruising, volunteering on various ships over the years. She joined Bare Necessities in 2010 and now plays a key role in ensuring maximum sales for their nudist cruises.

When asked about her typical day, Kat explains, ”For each cruise, I create schedules so our staffers know when they need to man the information booth, perform ‘dinner duty’ to make sure guests comply with the dress code, and join the dance club at night to make sure things go smoothly.”

Forming deep friendships

As Vice President of Sales, Kat also coordinates excursions at each port of call.

While the nudist aspect of the cruise is often sexualized, Kat is adamant about separating it from any misconceptions, keeping the focus on creating a relaxed, enjoyable experience for guests.

”To us, being nude is not sexual or anything to be ashamed of,” she explains.

”Nudism is about leaving judgment behind. When you’re not wearing clothes, you can’t immediately tell someone’s economic status or how they vote; you have to talk to them to find out who they are.

”Our guests form deep friendships that I don’t think form as readily on a textile cruise.”

She added: ”We’re not a swingers’ cruise. This is not lifestyle travel. There are plenty of those travel opportunities out there, but that’s not what we do.”

While the idea of a nude cruise might sound like it’s all about free-spiritedness and constant exposure, many who’ve experienced it say it’s actually a lot more laid-back and focused on relaxation than one might imagine.

And we should probably trust people who’ve been on the cruise when they say it’s not as ”nude” as you might think.

“For being a nude cruise, you’d be surprised that most people, 85% plus, wore clothing a lot of the time. All restaurants required you to be dressed, and even a few couples were formal, including some tuxedos. The buffet was clothing optional, with most all guests with something on from the waist down. I did find having fully naked people in the buffet line a bit cringe-worthy. So when did we get nude? About half the passengers could be found sunning on deck, in the pools or hot tubs on sea days, all were nude,” she said.

One rule for men

Se continued, “On NCL’s private island, all again nude. At dance parties, nothing like dancing without restrictions except for some accessories, and yeah, LED night was luminous. There was even a nudist musical couple from France that performed on two nights of the dance party! Then some of the excursions were also nude,” one Reddit user writes.

While a lot of things are allowed, there is one rule on the ship: Men can’t be overly ‘excited.’ Whitmire explained that she offers men one piece of advice if they start to feel themselves entering, well, a specific situation.

She told Business Insider: “We say that if they start to feel things around moving down there, jump in cold water, or think about baseball.”

So, is the nude cruise really as liberating and wild as it sounds, or is it just a laid-back, body-positive vacation with a little less clothing?
