The moment a UPS cargo jet crashed at an airport in Kentucky and burst into a huge fireball was seen on camera.

UPS Flight 2976 crashed just after taking off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport yesterday, November 4, at approximately 17:15 (EST).

Three members of the crew were on board the plane when it crashed just three miles south of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The incident happened close to two companies, including a recycling center that was struck directly and an auto parts store where all but two employees have been accounted for, according to Kentucky state governor Andy Beshear (via The Guardian).

According to police, the incident resulted in at least seven fatalities and eleven injuries, with airport officials confirming that the injured were sent to a hospital for treatment.

However, authorities warn victims have sustained “very significant” injuries, thus the death toll is certain to increase.

To ascertain the reason of the collision, an initial inquiry is still in progress.

“First responders are onsite and working hard to extinguish the fire and continue the investigation,” Beshear wrote in a post on X.

“Air monitoring assets have been deployed, and we are working to keep the public informed and keep folks in the area safe. We will share more information as it’s available.” he continued.

UPS also expressed on social media that their “heartfelt thoughts are with everyone involved” and that they were “terribly saddened by the accident tonight in Louisville.”

“They are’staying in close contact with the Federal Aviation Administration’ and are working with the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) investigation into the situation,” they added.

In a statement posted on their website, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport indicated that all flights leaving Tuesday had been canceled due to the accident. They also stated that they “have been in contact with the NTSB, who will be on-site tomorrow (November 5).”

The moment the jet burst into flames as it crashed into the ground was also captured on dash cam footage.

Additional camera footage has captured the emergency services arriving on the site and putting out the fire that started following the collision.

Although the exact cargo the jet was carrying at the time has not been confirmed, officials have stated that it was not carrying anything dangerous. The BBC reports that the plane was carrying about 38,000 gallons of fuel when it crashed.

Although Beshear and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) have advised the public to avoid the crash scene, the fire is currently thought to be mostly confined. An investigation team is anticipated to arrive in the morning in order to gather as much information as possible about the collision.

In a night service advisory, UPS said that delivery schedules for airborne and international shipments ‘may be affected’ as a result of the disaster.

It added: “Contingency plans are in place to help ensure that shipments arrive at their final destinations as quickly as conditions permit.”
