He produced major Hollywood films and starred in many of them, which brought him immense wealth, making him one of the highest-earning figures in the entertainment industry. However, behind this success lay a darker reality—he endured a traumatic childhood that involved abuse and mistreatment by his father.

Tyler Perry was born on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Sadly, his childhood was haunted by abuse, molestation, and even beatings.

His father brutally abused him, and when appearing on Oprah, he spoke out about what he had to go through for the first time ever.

The traumatic childhood has shaped his life in ways no one can imagine. For example, his father brutally whipped him with a vacuum cord, and Tyler recalled never feeling safe.

“To this day, I don’t know why he did it. But I remember him cornering me in a room and hitting me with this vacuum cleaner cord. He would just not stop. There are all these welts on [me], the flesh that’s coming from my bone, and I had to wait for him to go to sleep,” Tyler told Oprah. “When he fell asleep, I ran to my aunt’s house, and she was mortified when she saw it.

After one of the most vicious beatings from his dad, Tyler Perry revealed he blacked out for three days. He recalled his father playing “mind games.” The Hollywood star recalled living every day in fear, as there could be anything that set his father into a mode of abuse.

It got so bad that Tyler Perry one day even slit his wrists in the hope of committing suicide.

“I thought, ‘What is the point of living?’” Perry recalled to Oprah. “My mother was truly my saving grace, because she would take me to church with her. I would see my mother smiling in the choir, and I wanted to know this God that made her so happy. If I had not had that faith in my life, I don’t know where I would be right now.”

Physically and sexually abused

Besides the horrifying physical abuse, Tyler Perry was also sexually abused. All at the hands of four different adults. He recalled being five or six years old when he was molested the first time. As he built a birdhouse for his neighbor, an adult male put his hands in Tyler’s pants.

“I’m thinking, ‘What is this?’” Tyler says. “And I felt my body betraying me, because I felt an erection at that age.”

Later, a male nurse he knew from church molested him. He recalled it as his “first sexyua lexperience,” as the man performed oral sex on him. He was just a boy. Moreover, when he was 10 years of age, a friend’s mother molested him at his friend’s house.

“I’m 10. And she says, “You want to go home?” She lights a cigarette. She takes the key. She said, “Here’s the key.” I come over to get it, and she puts it inside of herself and she tells me to get it. So I—I get the key, but I feel my body betraying me again because I felt an erection. This is so disgusting, you know, what these people did to this little boy,” Tyler Perry recalled.

Became homeless and broke

In his own words, they all gave him “something to carry.

“I think that everyone who’s been abused, there is a string to the puppet master, and they’re holding you hostage to your behaviors and what you do. At some point, you have to be responsible for them. What I started to do is untie the strings and chase them down to where they came from. And I was able to free myself and understand that even though these things happened to me, it was not me,” Perry told Oprah.

After a tragic childhood, Perry dropped out of high school as a teen and began working at a hotel. He became a car salesman, but it was always the show business always felt as his main goal.

In the early 1990s, Tyler Perry poured his heartt into his first stage play, K Know I’ve Been Changed. All the money invested didn’t turn into a profit, and he was broke. Perry ended up living out of his car, bein homeles.

“I spent all my money to put this play up, and it didn’t work. After that, I tried again—many, many times—to produce the play. I would get different jobs between those times, but I’d quit to work on the play, and I ended up homeless. For three months, I lived in a Geo Metro that I was hiding from the repo man,” he said.
