Deadliest Catch star dies during filming

A rookie deckhand aboard a fishing vessel featured on Deadliest Catch has tragically died after an incident that occurred at sea.

Colleagues, friends, family, and fans are mourning the loss of 25-year-old Todd Meadows.

Deadliest Catch is a true television institution, having aired continuously since 2005. Anyone who has followed the series knows that the people who work on those boats are among the toughest individuals you’ll ever see.

They leave the safety of shore never fully certain they’ll return, heading straight into some of the most dangerous waters on the planet. Every trip is a gamble against the elements, exhaustion, and sheer bad luck. Long days, brutal weather, icy seas, and relentless physical labor are part of everyday life on the boats — and when something goes wrong, the consequences can be fatal.

Tragically, that reality became heartbreakingly real on February 25.

At just 25 years old, Todd Meadows — one of the newest crew members featured on Deadliest Catch — lost his life while filming the long-running show, cutting short a young life in one of the world’s most dangerous professions.

Meadows was working as a deckhand aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady during production of the show’s upcoming 22nd season in Alaska’s Bering Sea.

No official cause of death has been disclosed, but TMZ reported that Meadows died in a fishing-related incident while filming.

Captain Rick Shelford confirmed the loss in an emotional Facebook post shared on Monday, March 2, describing it as “the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady.” Production on the series has since wrapped, as filming was nearing its end at the time of Meadows’ passing.

“We lost our brother, Todd Meadows,” Shelford wrote.

“Todd was the newest member of our crew, he quickly became family. His love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”

Shelford also reflected on Meadows’ life off the boat, noting that he leaves behind a wife and three children who meant everything to him.

“He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him,” the captain continued. “Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express.

We ask that you lift Todd’s children and family in prayer and keep them in your thoughts as they face the days ahead without him.

Todd will forever be part of this boat, this crew, and this brotherhood. Though we lost him far too soon, his legacy will live on through his children and in every memory we carry of him.

Rest easy brother, till we meet again.”

A spokesperson for Discovery Channel also issued a statement expressing condolences:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows. This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time”

Following his death, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Meadows’ family and help cover funeral expenses. The fundraiser describes him as a devoted young father who was working on the water to provide for his three sons.

“We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Todd Morgan Meadows, a beloved 25-year-old father, son, brother and friend, who left us far too soon while doing what he loved — crabbing out on Alaskan waters,” the page reads.

“He was a determined dad to three amazing little boys who were his entire world. Everything he did was for them — their smiles, their futures, and the memories they will carry with them.”

The fundraiser has set a goal of $16,000 to assist the family during this difficult time.

Sadly, Meadows is not the first cast member from Deadliest Catch to die in recent years. The show has also previously lost several well-known figures, including Phil Harris, a captain and co-owner of the Cornelia Marie; Justin Tennison, who worked aboard the Time Bandit; and former captain Tony Lara.

In June 2024, veteran deckhand Nick Marvar passed away at 59 after what was described as a “medical emergency.” In 2020, deck boss Nick McGlashan died at the age of 33. In May 2018, former captain Blake Painter was found dead in his home in Astoria, Oregon. He was 38.
