Bondi Beach hero asks emotional question as he’s handed $2.5 million check while in hospital

Ahmed Al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit vendor, became a national hero after bravely disarming a gunman during a violent attack at Bondi Beach on December 14. As families gathered to celebrate Hanukkah, chaos erupted when two gunmen opened fire. Without hesitation, Ahmed ran toward danger, tackling and disarming one of the attackers and likely saving multiple lives.

Videos of the moment quickly spread across social media, showing Ahmed’s extraordinary courage. In the process of stopping the gunman, he was shot twice and later underwent surgery. As he recovered in hospital, tributes poured in from around the world, praising his selfless actions and calm resolve in the face of deadly violence.

Moved by the footage, influencer Zachery Dereniowski co-organized a GoFundMe campaign to support Ahmed during his recovery. The fundraiser highlighted his instinctive bravery and disregard for his own safety, calling him a true hero whose actions prevented further loss of life.

Donations surged rapidly, and within days the campaign raised more than $2.5 million. On Thursday, Dereniowski visited Ahmed in hospital to surprise him with a massive check, capturing the emotional moment on video.

Rather than celebrating, Ahmed responded with humility, quietly asking, “I deserve it?” When told he did, he used the moment to call for unity, compassion, and mutual care among all people, emphasizing that he acted from the heart to protect innocent families enjoying a peaceful day.

His words deeply moved viewers, sparking an outpouring of praise online. Many said Ahmed should never have to pay for another meal, while others called him a symbol of humanity and courage. To many, Ahmed Al-Ahmed is not just a hero of Bondi Beach, but a reminder of the power of selfless action.
