“Anyone know what this could be? I have found two piles of these … in my daughters’ room.”

Imagine this: You’re scrolling through Facebook, wasting a few minutes on a homemaking or cleaning group, and BAM! There’s that post that makes your thumb stop for a second. A photo. A suspicious pile. Brown. Almost coffee grounds, but not. The caption reads, “Does anyone know what this could be? I’ve got two piles of these… in my daughter’s room.”

The poster—who was in a rental—wanted to know what the heck she was looking at. It had no odor, it didn’t move, it looked like shells, it felt like dirt. And of course, anything showing up in a child’s room immediately goes to the top of the #1 “nope” list.

Of course, this blew up. Over 150,000 reactions, 7,000+ comments, and a visceral hive mind of Facebook cops trying to solve it. Was it bugs? Was it a spill, was it a messed up toy? The comments section became a murder board of speculation, theories, links to pest control websites, and how many said, “I would just burn the house down to be safe!”

Cue THE internet freakout.

At first, the usual suspects emerged:

Ants?

Mouse crap?

Termites? – Or maybe bat guano (why not, right)?

Some thought it might be fly larva casings. Others thought it looked like what the roaches leave behind. And then you had the more optimistic crowd wondering if it was just spilled potpourri or maybe crushed granola. Spoiler: it was not granola.

Oh—and TWO pest control companies were called. Both performed inspections of the room. They both left scratching their heads. Can you imagine having professionals in your home that make their living knowing what the stuff is, and they simply go “…huh”? That’s when you know it’s about to get weird.

The mom—Kelli Tarin—continued to update everyone. “Not letting my daughter sleep in there anymore,” she wrote. And who could blame her? At that point, the piles were still unidentified and every new guess made things even worse. But as they ruled things out—no bugs, no poop, no mold—they eventually got closer to… something.

Then, of course, the twist. Like any good internet saga, an answer eventually came by way of a random comment buried somewhere in the thread. Someone said it looked exactly like the stuffing from their kiddo’s lavender-scented bear. Huh. Okay.

So Kelli was brave/determined enough to start digging—literally—and found the bear. A lavender stuffed bear that had sprung a leak. And what was leaking out? Yep. A little pile of herbal stuffing that, in a few piles on the floor, looked exactly like something you should never, ever see in a child’s bedroom.

And that’s it. Mystery solved.

What I love most about this whole thing is the journey. It went from low-key terrifying to full-on laughter and relief. And in the middle of it all? A massive outbreak of a completely random swarm of people on the internet—some of them genuinely helpful, some of them dramatic, and some of them just along for the ride—all shooting out ideas and trying to help.

It is a pretty nice reminder that even the strangest things sometimes have an innocent and wholesome origin. Also maybe a reminder that before calling pest control, it might be worth looking to see if one of your child’s toys simply exploded quietly in the corner.

At any rate, if you ever discover a strange pile of “not quite dirt” in your house, perhaps don’t immediately diagnose termites or demons. Maybe check to see if there are any stuffed animals in the vicinity. Just a thought.
