Remembering 7-Year-Old Skylar Hopson: A Community Reflects on Her Life

A quiet neighborhood in Pearland was suddenly filled with urgency on the morning of March 11, 2026, when a seven-year-old girl was reported missing. The child, Skylar Hopson, had apparently left her home on foot earlier that morning. Around 9:40 a.m., her mother contacted the Pearland Police Department, prompting officers to respond quickly to the 2000 block of Sunset Springs Drive. According to authorities, Skylar had last been seen wearing a tie-dye dress and carrying her iPad. Because the young girl was non-verbal and on the autism spectrum, police immediately treated the situation as urgent and requested an AMBER Alert to help spread the word as widely as possible.

As news of the disappearance spread, the normally calm neighborhood became the center of a large search effort. Police teams deployed multiple resources, including K9 units, drones, and aerial support from the Houston Police Department. Officers also encouraged residents in the Shadow Creek Ranch area to check their home surveillance cameras and report anything unusual. Investigators later confirmed that a neighbor’s security camera captured footage of Skylar walking alone along a sidewalk while still holding her iPad. At that point, there was no indication she had been abducted, but authorities continued their efforts with urgency due to her vulnerability and the uncertainty surrounding where she might have gone.

As the search continued into the afternoon, trained dogs began following a scent trail that repeatedly led officers toward a nearby retention pond within the neighborhood. Around the same time, investigators were able to trace the signal from the child’s iPad, which also pointed toward the same location. Search teams quickly focused their attention on the area, and divers were called in to assist. At approximately 2:45 p.m., rescue personnel recovered the child from the water. Authorities later confirmed that she had passed away at the scene. The announcement brought a wave of sadness to the community that had spent the day hoping for a different outcome.

During a later briefing, police representatives spoke about both the scale of the search effort and the emotional weight of the day. Officers explained that teams used every available resource in their attempt to locate Skylar as quickly as possible. They also noted that incidents involving water are a known concern when searching for vulnerable children, which is why investigators checked nearby ponds early in the search. Community members were thanked for their cooperation and willingness to help. The tragedy has prompted renewed conversations about awareness and safety, especially around open water areas. While the investigation continues, many residents in Pearland are remembering Skylar and offering support to her family during an incredibly difficult time.
